Low arched feet or flat feet are a decrease in height of the instep or arch of the foot as compared to the “normal” foot. Medically, this is termed pes planus and is due to abnormalities in bone or joint structure as well as tendon imbalance. These abnormalities can result in significant pain around the instep and bottom of the foot. Other deformities such as bunions and hammer toes can be associated with the low arched foot.
Treatment
Your podiatric physician will examine the foot, perform a biomechanical examination, observe gait, and obtain x-rays to fully evaluate the foot and determine the cause of pain and proper treatment course. Custom functional orthotic therapy is often implemented in the symptomatic flat foot. Other treatment modalities may include use of anti-inflammatories, tapping, strapping, physical therapy and acupuncture.
